I mean, which is most attractive without being ‘gaudy’? Something that is not modest, but not ridiculous? Also is 14 carrot white diamond good, or just okay?
I meant 14 carrot white gold. :-P
Also, she wears a size medium glove and have long piano fingers… but not man hands.

The “cut or “make” of a diamond is the most important factor in a diamonds appearance

The “cut” of a diamond is often confused and thought to describe the shape of the gemstone when it actually describes the quality of workmanship and the angles to which a diamond is cut. Cut is the one factor of a diamond not predetermined by nature and is also a quality plainly visible to the person purchasing the diamond.

The skill with which a diamond is cut determines its ability to reflect and refract light. Diamond cutting is based on scientific calculations aimed at maximising the beauty of the gemstone. A diamonds beauty is dependent on a number of factor to do with the behavious of light as it enters and exits the diamond.

A well-executed round brilliant cut should reflect light upwards and make the diamond appear white when viewed from the top.

The precision and skill of the diamond cutter means that a well-cut diamond can appear to be of greater carat weight, clarity and color than they actually are. A good cut gives a diamond its brilliance, which is the brightness that seems to come from the very heart of the gemstone and its fire, the arrary of colour reflected in the light from the diamond.

When a diamond is well-cut, light enters through the table and travels to the pavilion where it reflects from one side to the other before reflecting back out of the diamond through the table and to the observer’s eye. This light is the diamonds brilliance that makes diamonds so captivating.

In addition to carrying the most importance to a diamond’s quality as a gemstone, the cut is also the most difficult to quantitatively judge. A number of factors, including proportion, polish, symmetry, and the relative angles of various facets, are determined by the quality of the cut and can affect the performance of a diamond.

A poorly cut diamond with facets cut only a few degrees out of alignment can result in a poorly performing stone. An inferior cut will produce a stone that appears dark at the center and in some extreme cases the ring settings may show through the top of the diamond as shadows.

WHAT CUT DIAMOND SHOULD I BUY?

If you are shopping for the perfect diamond engagement ring you would need a cut that is classified as “Good” or better.

Diamonds are graded on a scale from “Excellent” down to “Poor”. To make the best selection it may help to understand the reasoning behind the different grades.

Excellent Cut Diamond

This cut is intended to maximise brilliance, and the typically smaller table sizes of these diamonds have the added benefit of creating a great deal of dispersion or ‘fire’ as well.

Very Good Cut Diamond

These diamonds reflect the majority of the light that enters them, creating a good deal of brilliance. Very good diamond cuts deviate slightly from the ideal cut proportions in order to create a larger diamond.

Good Cut Diamond

These diamonds will reflect much of the light that enters them. Their proportions fall outside of the preferred range because the cutter has chosen to create the largest possible diamond from the original rough crystal, rather than cutting extra weight off to create a smaller Premium quality diamond.

Diamonds in this range offer an excellent cost-savings to customers who want to stay in a budget without sacrificing quality or beauty.

Fair & Poor Cut Diamonds

A diamond graded as fair or poor losses light reflecting only a small proportion of the light that enters it. Typically these diamonds have been cut to maximize the carat weight over most other considerations.

I am wanting to know how much is a 2 point princess cut diamond in carat weight because I am wanting to buy a pendent with 348 of these on it. They are genuine diamonds and it also has like a 3 point princess cut on the top of the bell. It weighs 1 once and is 14k gold. The price is at $2200.

Diamond Ring Buying Guide

Diamond Ring

Diamond Rings are one of the most important jewelry items, because of its cost, beauty, purity, and rare availability. Some well known sayings like “Diamond is a girl’s best friend” and “A diamond is forever” explain its significance.

Diamond Rings are most popular among all type of rings. People prefer to buy them for engagement or wedding purposes, although these days’ diamonds are popular for gifting too. Usually a ring is made of Gold, Sliver, or Titanium mounted by diamonds or other precious gems like sapphires, star sapphires, emeralds, and rubies, but nothing can beat diamonds in popularity.

Significance of Diamond Ring

Diamonds symbolize love. The rare beautiful stone represents treasured and forever love, as strong as itself, as pure as its own clarity. A diamond ring is not only important for brides and grooms, or couples planning to marry, this has to be handed down from generation to generation as blessing of elders.

Buying Diamond Ring

Diamonds and diamond jewelry are very costly. People buy them occasionally, so one should plan properly before purchasing a diamond rings according to individual’s choice, need, and budget.

There is a very old tested and proved theory for buying diamonds. We call it, 4C theory (Carat, Cut, Color, and Clarity).

Carat – Carat is a unit of weight for precious stones (1 Carat = 200 mg). Carat only deals with the weight of a diamond and has nothing to do with the size. The heavier (in mass) the diamond, the more carat it’s got.

Cut – Cut refers to the proportions, symmetry, and finish or make of the diamond. This can affect the price of a diamond by major amounts. Two diamonds with the same carat, color, clarity can have different cost based solely on how its cut. Depending on how a diamond is cut, the eye can perceive it as being larger.

The cut of a Diamond is the only property, which is artificial. Proportions and angles influence the internal reflection of light as well as the dispersion of light leaving the diamond. This determines the brilliance and fire (brightness and sparkle) of the diamond, and ultimately its beauty. How well cut a diamond is will reflect in the price.

Color: Diamond comes in several colors, such as blue, pink, purple, yellow, and red. But the most popular and rare variety of diamond is natural colorless diamond. Most gem quality diamonds fall within a range of color from colorless to yellow. D or colorless diamonds are rare. The color of a diamond is determined on the basis of a visual assessment by comparing it to a set of master diamonds under laboratory conditions. The differences between colors are very subtle and graded according to the International Color Grading Scale.

Clarity: This is the clarity of appearance when you look into a diamond. A flawless diamond will cost more than a similar diamond that is less flawless.

Apart from the theory of 4C, there is one more C-Certification which is very much important. A certificate for any diamond is a report prepared after a complete evaluation by an expert professional.

Is it Safe to Buy Diamonds Online?

So, is it safe to buy diamonds online? Yes and no. It is only safe if you follow these essential and simple rules:

EDUCATE YOURSELF ABOUT DIAMONDS

This may sound like an obvious tip but it is very important to understand the differences between diamonds. All diamonds vary based on four characteristics that you should be aware of. They are commonly known as the 4 C’s:

Cut – Here we are talking about the proportions of the diamond as opposed to its shape. If the angle at which the diamond was cut is not perfect, the brilliancy and scintillation of the diamond won’t be optimal. For instance, if the base of the diamond is too deep, light will be absorbed inwards instead of being reflected. Think of it as the diamond’s sparkle. Usually, a diamond’s cut will be referred to as Ideal, Premium, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. We recommend that you leave out Fair and Poor and aim for Very Good or better.

Clarity – Here we are talking about the number and the size of tiny inclusions within the stone or on the surface of the stone. The diamond’s clarity is referred to as FL (Flawless), IF (Internally Flawless), VVS1 VVS2 (Very, very small inclusions), VS1 VS2 (Very small inclusions), SI1 SI2 (Small inclusions) or I1 I2 I3 P1 P2 P3 (Inclusions, visible to the naked eye). These inclusions can block the light and affect the brilliancy of the diamond. Flaws are also visible to the naked eye starting from I1. Therefore, we do not recommend that you buy anything rated lower than SI2. You should preferably aim for VS2 or higher.

Color – Diamond color is usually rated using the letters D through Z. The rating D is the best color as it represents a colorless diamond. On the contrary, the rating Z is a brownish yellow. The rule is quite simple, the closer the diamond is to colorless, the more valuable the diamond will be. We do not recommend that you buy anything worse than J. So the only acceptable choices are D, E, F, G, H, I.

Carat – Carats always refer to the weight of the diamond. Therefore, it also refers to the size of the diamond, as diamonds always have the same density. We strongly recommend that you find the size that you want in real life and then buy it online. If you buy your fiancee a .30 carat diamond and she is expecting a 1.0 carat diamond, you may get in trouble!

CHOOSE THE RIGHT ONLINE RETAILER

Only buy from a reputable online retailer that only sells certified diamonds. The most common certifications are GIA and AGS. The certificate will ensure that you are getting the 4 Cs that the vendor advertised. You can research a certain online retailer’s reputation by looking at their reviews. For Canada, http://www.redflagdeals.com/deals/main.php/ratings/retailers/ provides an excellent source of reviews. Due to possible customs charges, outlandish shipping fees and possible legal warranties, it may be better to make the purchase from a retailer that is based in your country. It is also important to confirm that the vendor offers a 100% free 30 days return policy. That is the norm for good online retailers of certified diamonds.

LAST MINUTE TIP

Finally, we always recommend making your purchase through a credit card. If you have problems with a retailer and have exhausted all possible recourses with the company, it may be possible to fall on your credit card company for assistance. For example, VISA and MasterCard both offer purchase and fraud protection for certain tiers of their credit cards. Consult your credit card issuer for actual terms of service and carefully read the insurance policies as some clauses exclude protection for jewelry.
